Overview
Minnesota State is implementing Identity 3.0, a modernization of the identity management systems used across all Minnesota State colleges and universities. Phase One includes the replacement of the current Enterprise Identity Management system and introduces separate identities for student and employee roles. The most noticeable impact will be changes to student logins for campus resources and the separation of student and employee accounts.
Most users will continue to access enterprise services using their existing MSUM email address and password.
Who Is Affected?
Identity 3.0 affects:
- Students
- Faculty and staff
- Student employees
- Individuals who have both student and employment roles at MSUM
Key Changes
Students
Student logins for campus resources will change as part of the migration. Students should use their MSUM email address whenever prompted for a username. Enterprise services such as Microsoft 365, D2L Brightspace, Zoom, Kaltura, and Workday are expected to continue functioning with minimal impact.
Faculty and Staff
The employee login experience is not expected to change significantly. Continue using your current employee credentials for work-related access.
Student Employees
Student employees will have both a student account and a student employee account after migration.
This is a significant change because the student account and student employee account will become separate identities.
Additional information for student employees is provided below.

Student Employees
What Is Changing?
After the migration, student employees will have:
- A student account for student-related services and activities
- A student employee account for employment-related access and resources
The student account and student employee account will be separate identities.
What Happens to My Existing Campus Computer Profile?
The campus computer profile you currently use will remain available.
The profile currently associated with your StarID login will become associated with your student employee account after the migration. This helps preserve access to your existing work-related files, settings, and campus resources.

Password Changes
Important
Your student account and student employee account will have separate passwords.
After migration:
- Changing your student account password will not change your student employee account password.
- Changing your student employee account password will not change your student account password.
- Password management and password recovery will continue through the StarID Self-Service portal.
Because the accounts are separate, you may need to manage two different passwords.

Why Is Minnesota State Making This Change?
Identity 3.0 modernizes identity management across Minnesota State so account information is more consistent between enterprise and campus environments. Separating student and employee identities also helps align account ownership with a person's role and the resources they access.
