Mac Printing Help

Mac Printing Help

This article explains how to install an MSUM department printer on an MSUM-issued Mac, configure cloud printing on a student or personal Mac, and resolve common printing problems.
Important: Department printers can only be installed on MSUM-issued devices. Student-owned and personal Macs should use MSUM cloud printing.

Printing issue quick check

  1. Confirm the Mac has an active network connection.
  1. On an MSUM-issued Mac, confirm Kerberos SSO is signed in.
  1. If the StarID password recently changed, update saved credentials in Keychain Access.
  1. Confirm the expected printer appears under System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  1. Try a simple document from another application.
  1. Clear the print queue, then reinstall the printer if necessary.

Install a department printer on an MSUM-issued Mac

Install department printers through MSUM Self Service. Do not manually add a printer using an IP or SMB address unless directed by the IT Help Desk.
  1. Open Spotlight Search by selecting the magnifying-glass icon or pressing Command + Space.
  2. Open MSUM Self Service and sign in with StarID credentials.
  3. If administrator rights are unavailable, open Utilities and run Enable Print Queue Management.
  4. Open Printers, locate the department printer, and select Install.
  5. Allow installation to finish.
  6. Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners and verify that the printer appears.

Printer not listed?

Department printer access requires authorization. Student workers are not automatically granted access; a supervisor must submit the request.

Printing from a student or personal Mac

Use MSUM cloud printing on student-owned or personal Macs. Department printer queues are not installed on personal devices.
  1. Open the MSUM Mac cloud-print setup page.
  2. Download and install the Mobility Print client.
  3. Follow the on-screen setup instructions.
  4. When prompted, sign in using StarID credentials.
  5. Confirm that MSUM cloud printers appear in Printers & Scanners and in the application print window.
  6. Print the document and release the job at a supported campus release station or printer.

  1. Open the key icon in the menu-bar area.
  2. Confirm that you are signed in.
  3. If prompted, enter the current StarID credentials.

  3. Restart the Mac and check again.
  4. Reinstall Mobility Print if necessary.

Remove and reinstall a printer

  1. Remove the affected printer under Printers & Scanners.
  2. For an MSUM-issued Mac, reinstall it through MSUM Self Service.
  3. For a personal Mac, repeat the cloud-print setup.
  4. Test a simple document.

Determine whether the issue is application-specific

  1. Try a new simple document in the affected application.
  2. Try a PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
  3. Try a document in Microsoft Word.
  4. Try printing from Notes.

Reset all installed printers

Use this only when multiple printers are failing or when directed by the IT Help Desk.
Warning: This removes all installed printers, including personal printers and printers that are currently working.
  1. Open MSUM Self Service and sign in.
  2. Open Utilities and run Reset Print System.
  3. Select Erase Printers.
  4. Return to Printers and reinstall each required department printer.
Important: If Enterprise Connect appears instead of Kerberos SSO, contact the IT Help Desk so the Mac can be updated.
